Aged Care Sector Committee – Communique (18 September 2015)

The Aged Care Sector Committee (the Committee) held its seventh meeting on Friday 18 September 2015. The Committee met at the Quakers Hill Nursing Home in Sydney.

Mr David Tune, AO PSM, opened the meeting and Mr Gary Barnier, Managing Director, Opal Aged Care, provided an overview of the history of the Quakers Hill Nursing Home and outlined how Opal Aged Care has recovered from the devastating fire in 2011. Members were also taken on a tour of the facility during the meeting.

The Committee discussed a range of matters, with a focus on the development of the Aged Care Roadmap. Members were provided with some early directions from the Roadmap Advisory Group and then centred discussions on the role of government in the future aged care system. A draft of the Aged Care Roadmap will be circulated to members out of session, with further discussion to be held at the next meeting in December 2015.

The Committee also received an update on the work on the Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI) Advisory Group formed at the last meeting to monitor trends in ACFI expenditure. Ms Lynda O’Grady, Chair of the Aged Care Financing Authority (ACFA) provided an overview of the third ACFA Annual Report. Ms O’Grady also alerted members to ACFA’s investigation of the factors affecting the financial performance of rural and remote providers.

The Department also provided members with an update on the upcoming consultation opportunities for changes to aged care announced in the 2015-16 Budget.

The Committee will next convene on 4 December 2015.
