Guidance for the National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program

Page last updated: 24 October 2019

The Aged Care Legislation Amendment (Quality Indicator Program) Principles 2019 take effect from 1 July 2019, meaning that the National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program commences from this date for all Commonwealth subsidised residential aged care services.

The National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program requires services to collect data from 1 July 2019 on every care recipient each quarter, against the following clinical quality indicators:

  • Pressure injuries
  • Use of physical restraint
  • Unplanned weight loss.

Each service is required to submit their quality indicator data. Even if you are part of a larger provider group, data must be collected at the service level and submitted to the Department.

All Quality Indicator data must be submitted through the My Aged Care Provider Portal. Providers and services are required to activate this tile from 1 July 2019 to commence submitting quality indicator data to the Department.

Services using commercial benchmarking companies will be able to submit their data through their benchmarking company. The Department is working with these companies on a suitable data submission program, however it is important to note that it is the responsibility of the service provider to ensure their quality indicator data is submitted to the Department by the required dates.

If you require assistance to activate the Quality Indicator tile on the My Aged Care Provider Portal, please contact the My Aged Care Provider and Assessor Helpline on 1800 836 799.

National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program Manual

To collect nationally consistent data, it is important that the definitions and methods of collection are undertaken in the same way by all Commonwealth subsidised residential care services.

The National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program Manual contains the definitions for each quality indicator and instructions for collecting and submitting your quality indicator data to ensure you meet obligations under the mandatory Program.
