Aged Care Sector Committee – Communiqué – 13 September 2019
The Minister for Aged Care and Senior Australians, Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck, addressed the Committee, acknowledging their work in providing advice to Government on the aged care system. Minister Colbeck highlighted three key areas for discussion:
- progress of the Royal Commission in to Aged Care Quality and Safety
- implementation of the Aged Care Quality reforms
- regulatory changes regarding physical and chemical restraint.
Commissioner Janet Anderson PSM, Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, discussed the priorities and achievements of the Commission during its first eight months.
Members discussed progress of key reforms implemented to strengthen quality and safety in aged care, noting both a number of reforms which have progressed concurrently and the interdependencies which necessarily influence the scheduling of reforms.
The department provided an update on the development of a Serious Incident Response Scheme for residential aged care, including the current consultation process underway.
Members discussed current reforms or under consideration on issues relating to financial sustainability of the aged care sector, including the Resource Utilisation Classification Study and the Aged Care Approvals Round Impact Analysis.
The Aged Care Financing Authority (ACFA) discussed with Members the key aspects of ACFA’s 2019 Annual Report.
The Committee received updates from the Chairs of the Quality and Diversity sub-groups.
The next face to face meeting of the Committee is scheduled for 6 December 2019.
