Aged Care Sector Committee – Communiqué – 21 March 2019

The Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP addressed the Committee on progress on the implementation of aged care reforms, including expansion of home care packages.

Mr Ian Hardy AM, Interim Chair of the Aged Care Industry Workforce Council and Chair of the Aged Services Industry Reference Committee (IRC) presented on the work of the IRC relating to the Aged Care Workforce Strategy. Mr Lakshman Gunaratnam, Chief Executive Officer presented on the work of Miles Morgan Pty Ltd to support industry-led implementation of the Aged Care Workforce Strategy.

The Department provided an update on the Aged Care System Navigator measure and Australian Healthcare Associates (AHA) presented to members their approach for evaluation of this measure.

The Committee discussed the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

The Aged Care Financing Authority (ACFA) presented on the ACFA report ‘Understanding how consumers plan and finance aged care’.

The Department provided updates on:

  • implementation of the More Choices for a Longer Life 2018 Budget and Mid-Year Economic Outlook measures
  • a trial of the needs assessment framework recommended in the University of Wollongong’s Resource Utilisation and Classification Study and
  • the National Quality Indicator Program.

The next face to face meeting of the Committee is scheduled for 21 June 2019.
